Wooden Heat Treatment Service
ISPM 15 stands for International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15. These international regulations are designed to prevent the spread of pests and diseases through wood packaging materials used in international trade.
Under ISPM 15, wood packaging materials such as wooden boxes, crates, pallets, dunnage, and drums must meet specific phytosanitary requirements before they can be used for international shipments.
The regulations require all non-exempt wood packaging materials, whether made from hardwood or softwood, to undergo heat treatment to the core for a minimum of 30 minutes at 56°C. After successful treatment, the official ISPM 15 treatment mark may be applied by a WUDPAC-approved and accredited facility.
Wood used for packaging materials must also be debarked before undergoing heat treatment or other approved phytosanitary treatment. Debarking helps reduce the risk of pests becoming established or re-infested in the wood while it is being stored or manufactured into packaging materials.
Once the wood packaging material has been properly treated and the ISPM 15 mark has been applied, it generally does not require further treatment during subsequent international use, provided that it remains compliant and has not been repaired using untreated wood or become re-infested.
